Coffee Machine Cleaning

Why You Should Clean Your Coffeemachine

About 162 liters of coffee every average citizen drinks every year. Mineral water comes to 148 liters, tea only to 28 liters per person.

Researchers caution that the coffee set and used capsules and pads are germinated. "Wet coffee packs promote the growth of molds," explains Fritz Titgemeyer, head of the Laboratory for Food Microbiology at the University of Münster. If an old pad remains in the machine for a few days (from Friday to Monday in the company's break room), mold spores can remain in the pad container during the next use, which then enter the coffee. "Heat-stable toxins, so-called mycotoxins, may have formed which are neither seen nor tasted."

Also, water containers and plastic hoses are true bacteria centrifuges if they are not cleaned well. "Bacteria can settle in the form of biofilms," explains Titgemeyer. These mucous deposits should be thoroughly removed. "However, they are also found in hoses inside the machine, to which the user is not so easily approached."

The good news: As unpleasant as the idea is that microorganisms are swimming in the coffee machine, there is no danger to the health of the Münster researchers. "The brewing unit heats the water to 80 degrees Celsius, whereby germs in the water tank are killed." Caution is necessary with cold drinks. "All germs are contained in cold-extracted beverages such as iced tea or iced coffee."

Although many coffee machines have self-cleaning programs, the owner still has a task: "One has to take care of the machine and should renew the water in the tank every day," says Werner Scholz, Managing Director of the Household Appliance Associations in the Central Association of the Electrical Engineering and Electronics Industries in Germany.

Despite the different technology of the various models Scholz can issue as a rule of thumb: "All removable parts should be regularly cleaned by hand or in the dishwasher." How to proceed is described in the operating instructions. "The instructions there should be followed."

There are some places in coffee machines and pad machines that are particularly sensitive and need special care. Everywhere where heat and humidity occur, you have to look thoroughly. Water tank, drip tray, milk frother, brewing unit and pans are very susceptible to bacteria and mold.
